Student representation on the College of Science, Engineering and Health (SEH) governance committees

1. What is governance?
An organisation's governance structure is separate from management; it takes an objective view of the management of an organisation when participating in the planning and decision making processes. Membership of governance committees may include internal (students and staff) and external stakeholders. Governance is the set of internal structures and processes an organisation uses to:
- Make decisions relating to its regulations and standards.
- Ensure that it is operating and managing appropriately and according to its regulations and standards. The operating regulations and standards are determined by the interests of an organisation's internal and external stakeholders.
- Be accountable to others in that it is operating and managing appropriately and according to its regulations and standards.
- Monitor, check and improve.
2. SEH College committees
TAFE, undergraduate and postgraduate students are eligible to join the College Board and Academic Development Committee. Contact Rick Ryan for more information about each committee. Copies of committee terms of reference can be provided on request.
3. Role of a governance committee member
Before the meeting:
- Be familiar with the Committee's Terms of Reference.
- Read and understand the agenda and papers ahead of the meeting (This can include speaking with the secretary, the Chair or the proposer of the item).
At the meeting:
- Listen to the discussion.
- Ask questions to clarify what is being discussed.
- Ask questions that address any concerns or doubts you have.
- Share your understandings from the student perspective.
After the meeting:
- Read the minutes/action lists to ensure they reflect a true account of what happened in the meeting and report any anomalies to the secretary.
4. Who is eligible to be a member of an SEH governance committee?
Undergraduate, postgraduate and TAFE students enrolled in a College of Science, Engineering and Health program. It is desirable (but not essential) for students on committees to be a member of their Student Staff Consultative Committee (SSCC) and have completed SSCC training.
5. To be eligible for RMIT LEAD recognition
Students who attend governance committee training and a minimum of four governance committee meetings are eligible for the RMIT LEAD Certificate
- The RMIT LEAD certificate is an official RMIT document signed by the RMIT Vice-Chancellor.
- Your participation may also be recorded on your RMIT academic transcript.
6. RMIT University Student Advisory Committee
Students from SEH College are also eligible to join the RMIT Student Advisory Committee (SAC). Contact Rick Ryan if you are interested in joining the SAC.
