Public Lecture: Media Fragmentation, Party Systems and Democracy
Free public lecture presented by Professor Paolo Mancini University of Perugia.
What are the implications of media fragmentation for party systems and for democracy more generally?
A more segmented, less centralized, and more advocacy-oriented media system is taking the place of the previous dominant professional model, based on the ideology of neutrality and objectivity.
This attracts many complaints, mostly in Western countries and particularly in the US, even if it doesn’t represent a universal trend (for example, the developing journalism in India, China and Brazil).
In this free public lecture, Professor Paolo Mancini will discuss these and other topics, both from an historical perspective and with supporting examples from the present situation in the European Union and beyond.
Profesor Mancini is Visiting Fellow with the ERC-funded project on Media and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe.
He is the Opening Keynote Speaker at the Media, Communication and Democracy: Global and National Environments conference (31 August-2 September).
