Talk 1: Adapting Power System Control to Diverse Generation
Presenter: Professor David J. Hill
Abstract:
Future power systems will feature much higher levels of uncertainty due to mandatory targets for renewable generation. This will necessitate a rethinking of many analysis and control approaches. We will review these trends and offer plans for an agenda of research and development needed to ensure performance and security of power networks while these major changes evolve. We will suggest that ideas from complex network science and modern control can be used to extend the idea of an intelligent or smart grid that has arisen recently for operating future power systems. The vision is a more adaptive and self-healing character, enabling greater flexibility in the power system response to generator volatility, failures and even attacks to the grid.
BCV:
Professor David J Hill is currently an ARC Federation Fellow at The Australian National University. From 1994-2004, he held positions at The University of Sydney, and was the Chair in Electrical Engineering until 2001. From 2001 he was also Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. He currently holds honorary professorships at University of Sydney, University of Queensland, South China University of Technology, City University of Hong Kong, Wuhan University and Northeastern University (China). From 1996-1999 and 2001-2004, he served as Head of the departments in Sydney and Hong Kong. Prof Hill’s basic research interests are in network systems science, stability analysis, nonlinear control and applications. His applied work has consisted mainly of various projects in electrical power systems. Prof. Hill is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, USA, the Australian Academy of Science, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.
Talk 2: Low Emissions Distributed Energy in the CSIRO Energy transformed Flagship
Presenter: Terry Jones
Abstract:
Overview the tasks of the Flagships in CSIRO and explain the mission of the Energy transformed Flagship. Review the research and development work going on in CSIRO in the area of distributed energy and how this is relevant to climate change.
BCV:
Terry Jones is a Chartered Engineer and has 20+ years experience in the Utilities industry globally. During this time he has led teams in SCADA, Protection and Control, Communications, Metering and Energy Trading. He has worked extensively in Europe and Scandinavia, the Middle East and most recently in Australia and the USA. In Australia Terry has been involved in deregulation of the Australian Electricity industry and energy trading. Currently Terry is Theme Leader of the Low Emissions Distributed Energy Theme in the Energy Transformed Flagship and Director of the Centre for Distributed Energy and Power, and industry association promoting DE solutions.
