To outline the requirements for the engagement of secondary and other students for practical placement and work experience at RMIT

Scope

All areas of RMIT providing practical placement and work experience to secondary and other students.

Exclusions

Traineeships and apprenticeships.

1. Prior to commencement

I. Ensure a written agreement with RMIT and the training organisation or secondary school is prepared, outlining the following:

a. Formalise the arrangements and conditions between RMIT and the training organisation or secondary school.

b. Define the placement, so that all parties are aware of their rights and responsibilities.

c. Outline the start and finish dates and times of the placement.

d. Provide details of the rate of payment (if the student is to be paid by RMIT)

e. Provide safeguards should a dispute or problem arise during the placement.

f. Provide the ability for the arrangement to be cancelled with written notice at any time by RMIT, the training organisation or secondary school.

g. Clarify responsibility of insurance coverage for the student in the case of injury which must be outlined in the written agreement prior to commencement.

II. Nominate a workplace supervisor for the student and advise the supervisor of their responsibilities in relation to the student.

The supervisor’s responsibilities should include:

a. Supervising and monitoring the student’s performance.

b. Assisting the student to apply skills to the workplace.

c. Participating in student evaluation and feedback.

d. Allowing for visits from the training organisation to assess and monitor the student’s performance, if needed.

e. Contacting the coordinator in the training organisation or secondary school if there is a problem or misunderstanding.

f. Having a working with children check (if applicable)

2. Payment

If the student is paid by RMIT follow payment of casual staff policy and procedure.

3. Ensure a safe workplace

Ensure a safe workplace for the student in accordance with RMIT policies and procedures.

4. Induction

The student should undergo an induction to RMIT and the following steps should be covered:

a. Arrange all necessary IT and security access for the student.

b. Provide the student with an induction to the local area and inform staff members of the presence of the student and the purpose of the placement.

c. Ensure all online induction modules are completed.
