Approval and class of travel policy

Intent and objectives

Approval to travel must be obtained prior to departure in accordance with existing procedures, as set out in the Extract from Table of Authority below. The Travel Authority should be completed and authorised when:

  1. Staff members undertake any interstate, intrastate or international flights in order to conduct RMIT business.
  2. Staff members propose to conduct RMIT business off campus for more than 24 hours.
  3. RMIT is paying the airfare and/or accommodation costs for visiting consultants, lecturers, professionals.
  4. RMIT is paying the airfare and/or accommodation costs for students to attend various business activities or conferences associated with their study.

Approval of travel and associated expenditure

Domestic Travel – Head of School / Director of Group

International Travel – Pro Vice-Chancellor DSC / SET / Business / Director of Group

Class of travel

All RMIT staff shall fly economy class except:

Pro Vice-Chancellors, Directors and above, on flights of two hours or more (who may fly premium economy or business class, subject to prior approval).

Other staff members undertaking flights of 10 hours duration or more, may travel premium economy or business class at the discretion of the approving manager, subject to prior approval.

When two staff members travel together, they may travel at the senior person’s class of travel, subject to prior approval.
