Guidelines

Format

There are various formats currently being used in which information about WIL activities is provided to workplaces. The majority of the information is comprehensive, links appropriately to the program and course requirements (if any), and provides appropriate support to workplaces providing the activity.

RMIT staff may use any format to provide information to workplaces WIL activities.

Topics that must be included in distributed information:

1. A brief description of the purpose / aims of the activity

2. Information regarding supervision expectations

3. Insurance coverage of students.

4. Payment arrangements for student (if any)

5. Emergency / accident / grievance / withdrawal procedures

6. A list of host employer’s responsibilities:

Suggested responsibilities:

  • Nominating and supporting a workplace supervisor to be responsible for the student during the activity;
  • Advising the student of Occupational Health & Safety requirements - Provide a safe workplace where the student is able to practise their skills (refer Appendix 1);
  • Informing the student of the organisation’s Equal Opportunity and other related policies such as Sexual Harassment, Anti-Discrimination, etc.
  • Treating the student as a new employee at entry-level standard;
  • Informing employees of the presence of the student, the reasons and purpose of the placement;
  • Contacting the RMIT coordinator if there is an accident, problem or misunderstanding;
  • Allowing visits by training provider representatives to assess and monitor student’s progress;
  • Supervising the student and monitoring performance;
  • Helping the student to apply skills to the workplace setting;
  • Participating in student evaluations/feedback (as required);

2. Relevant definitions

3. Information about general student type and needs

4. Industry skills expected to be experienced in this workplace

5. Program of training for student to provide progressive accumulation of competencies

6. Host employer role: what, how, when, return of assessments, etc.

7. RMIT role: visits, assessments

8. Capacity of workplace supervisor to assess

9. Importance of feedback from host employer or supervisor to student throughout placement period
