Professor Peter Coloe was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor Science, Engineering and Health and Vice-President in August 2008 having previously held the position of Head, School of Applied Sciences.
Professor Coloe is a long serving senior staff member, with more than 20 years service to RMIT. He has made an impressive contribution to RMIT’s management and teaching and learning initiatives whilst achieving his own substantial research milestones and maintaining strong links to industry and Government.
Serving on the RMIT Council since 1999, Professor Coloe has contributed to the University’s overall management, strategic and budgetary planning initiatives over this time. He has been an active member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive and the University Academic Promotions Committee.
Since 2000 he has Chaired RMIT’s Academic Board and has championed many of the University’s teaching and learning developments, particularly in the study of science. He has led the submission of numerous successful grants that fostered cross discipline interaction between biotechnology and business. Professor Coloe has played a substantial role in internationalisation of the curriculum, International Linkages and International recruitment including various aspects of intellectual property law, and the expansion of innovative delivery of bioinformatics and proteomics into RMIT’s Bachelor of Science and Masters in Biotechnology and Business programs.
As the Head, School of Applied Sciences he consistently reviewed the programs offered to ensure the delivery of innovative programs that encompass the integration of scholarship in Biotechnology. He strives to provide a stimulating and challenging environment for students and establishes effective and efficient mechanisms for knowledge transfer. A highly sought after research supervisor, Professor Coloe has shared his knowledge and assisted more than 50 post graduate students in their pursuit of academic excellence.
A prolific researcher, Professor Coloe has more than 160 publications and has been awarded three worldwide patents which have gained him international recognition. He has made an important contribution to the understanding, detection and control of infectious diseases in humans and animals.
Professor Coloe is an advisor to the Federal Government’s Biosecurity Australia Risk Assessment Panel and the Victorian Government taskforce on Biotechnology, a member of the Editorial Board of Microbiology Australia, the Chair of the Qualifications Committee and member of Council of the Australian Society for Microbiology, and an ARC and NHMRC Grants referee. He is a past-president of the Federation of Asia Pacific Microbiological Societies, and member of the International Union of Microbiology.
