Laboratory Medicine is the field of study that applies laboratory based scientific investigation to the diagnosis, treatment and better understanding of disease processes.

Laboratory Medicine at RMIT is the only professionally accredited program in Victoria that prepares graduates for employment as Medical Scientists in all of the major disciplines of laboratory investigation, including Haematology, Transfusion and Transplantation Science, Cytopathology, Medical Microbiology, Histopathology and Clinical Biochemistry.

It is estimated that up to 70% of clinical decisions made by doctors are based on the information provided by medical scientists. Graduates of the Laboratory Medicine program are qualified as Medical Scientists and play a vital role in the health care system.
