Professor accepted into elite academy

Professor Pavel Trivailo of RMIT University's School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering has been elected a full member of the International Academy of Astronautics.

He was presented with an Academy Award Certificate recognising his contribution to the space sciences and services to the IAA at a conferring ceremony in Paris.

As the only Australian elected into the prestigious IAA in the Engineering Sciences section, Professor Trivailo reinforces RMIT's international standing in the aerospace field and joins an elite group of respected experts, scientists and pioneers.

Grant for simulated learning research

Associate Professor Jenny Sim, Head of Discipline, Medical Radiations has been granted more than $190,000 to investigate the Simulated Learning Environment Program.

This project, led by the Department of Health in partnership with Health Workforce Australia, will include the participation of 17 radiation oncology centres across Victoria.

This work follows on from seed funding from RMIT's Learning and Teaching Investment Fund in 2011.

Alumnus awarded Fulbright Scholarship

RMIT alumnus Dr Hamish Graham has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarship as one of only 25 Australian recipients.

The largest educational scholarship of its kind, the Fulbright Scholarship is aimed at promoting mutual understanding and educational exchange among academics worldwide.

Dr Graham's scholarship has allowed him to spend a year studying a Masters of Public Health at the John Hopkins School of Public Health in Baltimore, USA, focusing on childhood malnutrition.

Promoting visions of shared responsibility

RMIT recently hosted Visions of Sharing Responsibility for Disaster Resilience, a one-day workshop to promote discussion and networking among stakeholders in the fire and emergency management sector.

It was conducted as part of Sharing Responsibility - a research project by Professor John Handmer and Dr Blythe McLennan, which forms part of RMIT's newly created disaster research network.

The workshop was supported by RMIT's Centre for Risk and Community Safety in the School of Mathematical and Geospatial Sciences on behalf of the Bushfire CRC and the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility's Emergency Management Network.

Triple glory at China Bridge Competition

First-year International Studies student Clarissa Belanti won first prize at a recent China Bridge Competition held at La Trobe University after delivering a remarkable speech and performance.

Ms Belanti will now be fully sponsored by the Chinese Government to represent Australian university students in the final of the international China Bridge Competition in July.

Oliver Theobald, a third-year International Studies student, won third prize, and the students' supervisor, Dr Yi Jin, a lecturer from RMIT's language discipline, was awarded the Outstanding Supervisor Award.
