Seminar: Private Equity and Hedge Funds: Their Effect on Labour

This seminar will outline how private equity and activist hedge funds impact on labour and employment. It will review the extant evidence and report the findings of a set of case studies in several European countries.

This issue is highly topical in Europe, with sharply divided views on the costs and benefits of these funds. A European Directive to regulate these funds - the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive - is currently under consideration in the European Parliament. The seminar will also highlight the main elements of this draft directive. The presentation will draw in part on The Impact of Investment Funds on Restructuring Practices and Employment Levels, published by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions in October 2010.
